Self employment to employee

Any one done it and what's your experience.

I know some employers have a real problem with it thinking you will just rush off as soon as you find another business opportunity or having been your own boss are now somehow incapable of having a line manager, a few do value it thought motivation etc.

what's your experience and any advice

I've been an employee and then self employed for a period of time.

When I stopped being self employed, I went back as an agency worker on fixed term contracts. This allowed me to get back into work and having a boss, whilst avoiding all of the internal office politics that I find so dull.

My track record as self employed proved that I was a self starter, motivated and able to run projects from start to finish with minimal input, which suited the companies I was working for (I tended to be brought in to get stalled projects completed).

Turn any experience into a positive.

I have just done the same thing. I move between the two as circumstances dictate.
Went to work for a start up as a self employed and ended up being an employee.
I had no problem with it, stayed there a while and am now back to freelancing while my new employer gets contracts together.
I have found that as long as you explain to potential employers why you had a lot of short term work as a contractor there was no issue.

Yep - done that.

Run my own ad agency for 6 years which suffered a fair bit of bad debt, forcing me to reverse what was left into an existing business and me take on a normal 'employee' role.

The biggest challenge was psychological - remembering that I have a boss and systems to adhere to but also a support network that I didn't have previously. It took a long while to step out of that sole trader mindset and arguably, I never did, I just got used to it.
