Analysis careers - from scratch
Discussion
I'm lucky enough to be youthful and useless and in the position where I can (theoretically) point myself at a career and press 'go'.
I have not been to university yet but I have the capability, backing and grades to do so should it be necessary.
Recently I've spent a lot of time looking and understanding my skills to make it easier to decide a path.
'Analysis' is a broad term but it's probably the most fitting. I have a very good eye for detail, writing skills, problem solving skills and the like.
In the interests of not tooting my own horn too much I do get bored and restless very easily and therefore like a good splash of variety.
Working as an intelligence analyst is one such career that appeals - especially as I have a healthy interest in foreign affairs, military tech, geopolitics etc.
But, I don't really know what other areas may be relevant, and learning about similar jobs folks on here do, and the paths they took, would be useful. The blessing (and curse) is that I can get interested in just about anything, so try me!

Consider competitive intelligence/business intelligence. Go to the SCIP website for more info.
Or look at management consulting or project management for variety of work.
Other advice would be to go through university- you'll get nowhere without a degree these days. I'd probably go as far to say that you'd need an advanced degree- e.g. MBA to get anywhere within the blue chip companies and if you wish to forge a career.
You seem to be very level headed to be thinking about your career this early (I wish I had!)- you can direct your efforts now to the areas you need to develop in. With that said, you'll also find that life throws many curve balls at you- some good, some bad; and you may end up disappointed if you try to stick to a single minded plan too doggedly.
Having the ability to analyse information, think strategically and be able to be organized and able to manage complex projects and/or people is a very transferably skill set; so you should always have a number of options available to you. good luck!

Thanks everyone. Travel risk is an interesting one.
MI5/GCHQ or whatever is relevant had indeed crossed my mind. I must admit I am not that enthusiastic about government work - my parents are career civil servants and, while it's wrong to base your perception completely on their experiences, I can't help but feel put off.

Great advice, thanks. I must admit with regards to business, numbers are not a strong point of mine, if I'm honest a weak point. Certainly some opportunities there, though.Or look at management consulting or project management for variety of work.

I have blown hot and cold about university for quite a while but I'm resigned to it now, it's simply the most logical option. You're spot on about sticking to things too much - and I've always been really afraid of picking a direct path as some people do for this reason. Nonetheless it's refreshing to be able to narrow down relevant fields and skills. You seem to be very level headed to be thinking about your career this early (I wish I had!)- you can direct your efforts now to the areas you need to develop in.
