Why not start your own competitive business with the information and contacts you you have gained over time?

This had crossed my mind, but i think it would be pretty hard because i wouldnt have any 'high spec demo homes' to show new customers around... and when your asking people to spend ALOT of money on custom install i think i would realistically struggle to win over business against competition if im on my own.

As currently i would meet a client at one of our larger flagship homes, which would make selling my company to them is alot easier, as they are very impressed with the house firstly then they find it comforting knowing im part of a group where they know a local luxury builders.

I also would have to look for investment as i have no savings as im trying to get on the property ladder currently. Although, i have had a couple of offers from friends of my fathers who have sold up their businesses, that if i come to them with a solid busines plan they will invest in me, but im not sure if i would want to go down this route again?

Wrok out what the minimum you will accept is. Do not go below this in negotiation. Meet, set out your stall and see what he has to say. If a deal is do able then put it in writing to him but don't move an inch until he hass signified his agreement to it is writing.

If no do able deal is available or he fails to put things in writing then walk. In the meantime you are being paid to learn skills many pay to learn. It may feel a little rough now but one day you will see just how big a leg up this guy is currently giving you.

You're not sounding like a salesman. It sounds like you need a salesman.

Honest question- are you more of a bookworm economist than a gift of the gab one?

Best advice, know your weaknesses and hire people who fill gaps in your abilities.

Yes, thats a fair point, with regards to working out the minimum i would accept- asking for 50% now and with the opportunity to increase it to 75% over the next 2/3 years ( payable at market price) does that sound fair?

But yes, i fully appreciate the opportunity iv been given, and have tried to absort as much information as possible for my long term benefit.

Honestly- im not a salesman. I have upsold all my AV clients fairly well though, and am closer to the gift of the gab than a bookworm. but i may have picked up some of it from friends who are in sales/recruitment.

Thanks for the advice, makes alot of sense! I would be looking to hire a salesman and an admin staff if i decided to stay for sure! just dont want to make that sort of financial commitment to the business and people if im not going to stay..

There are many others who know far better than me but one thing I have picked up on recently (and to be fair something I have known but not properly acknowledged for many years) is to be able to sell.

I hate being a sales person. I can do it, but I really don’t like it. That said you have to be a sales person to get ahead, even if only to sell your own skills and ideas rather than the latest widget.

I am trying to sort this out personally and know it is an area that needs work. It just scares the bejesus out of me though, partly because it is out of my comfort zone and partly because I have a strong suspicion that it could lead on to some major life changes, and I already have a good life compared to many so there is a lot at stake!
