How long does it usually take to receive a reply when applying for a job through a recruitment agency?

Not true. Quite often it can take 2-3 days to get feedback from the client and if there are a few people going for the same role they may want to see everyone before deciding on who to progress to the next stage.

I would say ask the consultant when he expects feedback and go off that.

2-3 days is for the thanks but no thanks from the agency, I.e. you failed the CV sift to even get passed forward.

Most companies in Aberdeen use recruitment companies to fill roles, it's just a necessary evil.

Fair enough. I'll admit to be wrong in making the comment I did.

I have come across many times, recruitment companies advertising roles which don't exist. I could well be wrong, but it has amazed me how many times the same job description comes up with the same agencies over and over and over again. Any interest results in the same reasons as to why I can't apply or, further questioning about the role results in no answers for varying reasons - there is also never a job spec available either.

My comment was based on my own experiences and yes, I was wrong to generalise across all companies and all industries.

Often job adverts contain proprietary terms & phrases for systems, processes, teams etc. A bit of searching around those terms often helps narrow down the company. There are a few in my industry that are immediately recognisable through their use (and misuse) of standard terminology.
