Hello,

My question is as per the title really but essentially is it as follows:

Company A have offered me a position starting next week.

Company B have offered me a role starting at the beginning of next month.

Salary is near as damnit the same however A has a commission structure whereby I could almost double up (subject to performance etc).

A is a new role for me and also a new angle for the company.

B is long established and what I have done for the last 5 years.

B is the 'better choice' in my mind for career progression however I am currently unemployed and in desperate need of some income and therefore I have a nagging feeling that A will generate income a little sooner. Any suggestions as to what to do?

How long did it take you to find work? In your position if I found work quickly I would be more likely to take a risk on the new direction with potential extra money. If it had taken me 6 months to find work I would probably go for the safer route with the more established player. But this is one that really only you can decide smile

You need to see if a company matches your ambitions and principles, and whether it is the kind of business you want to entrust your future career with. Knowledge will give you the power to make the right choices.

Company culture is one of the most important factors to take into account. Unlike your salary, this is not something which can be negotiated - it is already set in stone. Think about when you went in for your interviews, or if you were shown around the office. Which company made you feel more comfortable? Which one had an environment where you would enjoy your work and flourish?

Remember to also consider your personal situation.

Most people have a long-term career plan, and you would want a role which corresponds with this. You need to make sure that there will be a chance to build on your skills and to develop in the role. Successful people should always be looking to keep moving forward; there is no point in taking a job which will be a dead end.

Strongly agree with the above; strategic fit is more important for long term satisfaction. Good luck!
