New company,very petty R.E. bonus.

I got a permanent job at a company (M&E contractor) about ten weeks ago,yesterday one of the blokes says to me "that bonus was alright this week", checks my wage slip when I got home,no bonus for the new guy.
I think it is really petty to pick and choose who they give the bonus to.Companies show their true colours eventually,and this cew have show theirs.

I've been with companies before where bonus's are not paid in the first 6 months / Year / During probation etc. Are you sure that not the case with your current? Bit crap if that's the case as they obviously haven't made it clear...

I knew it must be due to just starting with them,not to worry,nothing lost.
The conversation went on from the bonus to this guy getting finished just before he had his two years in with them.Why are people so afraid to commit.The conversation was an eye opener.

I've known companies to pro rata bonuses for employees who have not been there for a whole year.

I've known companies who don't pay you ANY bonus until you've worked a full financial/bonus year.

EG, bonus "year" is April to April, join in October, don't get a bonus until you've been there 18 months.

Seems pretty standard to me. A bonus is usually paid if the individual/company hit certain targets over the previous 12 months. As you weren't working there during that period then no bonus.

You should find out what the terms are for the bonus. Different employees may well be in different bonus schemes.

Um, what does your contract of employment state with respect of any bonus?

Have you even passed your probationary period yet? I wouldn't be expecting much, if any, bonus in your shoes being so new to the company.

I read it as though there is a weekly bonus - "Bonus was alright this week". If that is the case then surely the OP has contributed.

some places where weekly pay is still common will pay the various bonuses one week in arrears ...

in the 3PL I currently work for , hourly paid staff get a ( fairly nominal) attendance bonus ( if you work all your planned shifts for the week and are on time- you get this 'bonus') and previously there was a complex and time consuming to administer individual perofrmance scheme which had an impact on hourly rate ( base , +10p/hr, +30p/hr) which was calculated monthly, but paid weekly based on last months performance rating) - they've binned that as they realised it cost more to adminster than it would 'save' and upped the hourly rate and brought ina department based performance scheme based o nthe labour planner - if your dept beats the planner the dept gets an extra half day leave ...

i read that he is working for a M&E contractor, so assumed not sales and also his colleague was just commenting on the fact he recieved his bonus on that particular week.

My first bonus (sorry, Annual Discretionary Award ) in my current job was £2.50 for the 3 weeks I'd been there.

Of course we are assuming that the other fella is telling the truth.

Not unknown to have someone walk into the canteen knowing there's a few newbies hanging around claiming that last month's pay was a good'un thanks to the bonus, of which there isn't one, and see who bites...

I was not expecting it,just wondered if I would be included.
Perhaps I should make a song and dance about the schematic they gave me being totally wrong instead of just putting the valves in the correct way without any fuss.

I quietley asked other people and it was not just the first guy bragging.

Maybe just ask them. Either HR or your boss. NICELY. There may be a policy about not giving bonuses in the first X months. Maybe someone's forgotten to tell you what the target for yours is.

Sounds like my place... joined in June last year... I need to be there Jan to Jan to get my first bonus, so 18 months before I qualify for first bonus.

Though I did get told in March what it will be this year though so thats nice.
