Getting out of IT

Has anybody any advice, been in it for about 15 years but it bores the life out of me. I'm ok at it but no genius. I've always had a mechanical brain not digital but at the the time thought it was right for me but find I'm swapping jobs average of 2 years looking for the right one. I think this is me trying to run away from it, friends plus family think its crazy the number of jobs I've had. The arse of it is I can't afford to drop anymore money ,lost money already in lat 2 moves.

The trick will probably be to find an area of work you want to move into, and work out a path towards it. It may take time and qualifications, but at least you will know that you are doing something about it. No, I don't know how you decide either.

With a post like this it's always hard to offer any advice as you've not really said anything about what you DO want, only what you don't.

So, what do you want?

Also, a bit of background on what you do currently might be useful, "IT" covers everything from changing toner cartridges upwards.

Finally, is it the work itself, or the organisations you work for? If it's the latter, go contracting and leave office politics behind.

As above, you need to decide what you DO want to do, now that you know what you DON'T want to do. Once you know that you can start planning a path towards it. Not easy to decide of course.

I realise there are many ifs and buts and it's only me who can find the answer, it's been playing on my mind and I just wanted to vent it!

I do varied it, c# ,SQL ,support,servers. Jack of all master of none so to speak. It's IT can ignore politics quite easily! Tried to move to real time stuff do controls etc but got no where .

In terms of moving and losing money; perceived wisdom is to only move for a c20% increase in total remuneration package.

To your question; answer as quickly as you can: what do you really want to be? There's your answer. Now work out how to get there. Good luck!
