Theoretically... Declaring part time income

Folks,

I work full time for a large Government organisation so this would obviously be dependent on their approval, however...

Currently volunteer at a large home for the disabled doing their gardens. I have been approached by a few people who want private gardening work. I'm fairly good at general maintenance, etc.

Now, assuming that work were ok with me doing this in my spare time, how would it work with 'legitimate' cash income- IE assuming I earnt around £50/week. Would this need to be declared somehow separately to PAYE?

I earn around £35k in my main job, no other sources of income except lodger (well within Rent A Room threshold)

I've done a similar sort of thing - you'd need to fill out a tax return if you wanted to do it properly. Not that difficult at all, and with a reasonably simple situation it wouldn't take more than an hour or two.

As above I suspect you would be "self employed" as a handyman/gardener for the purposes of the Tax Man and would then need to go with the on-line self assessment...

This would be self-employment so you would need to do a self-assessment tax return.

(unless of course you never invoice, or advertise and only ever get paid in cash, which whilst very illegal may go undetected if you are very lucky)

Thanks very much, sounds like a self-assessment return wouldn't be a massive pain. I'm certainly not risking doing it off the books!

Don't forget some liability insurance might be sensible.
