permanent to contract
Discussion
I have a friend that is fed up with his job but I am finding it hard to advise him because I am self employed. He is a permanent full time employee of a company and a job he would really like to do has come up but its a fixed term contract for 12 months. Would you take the risk and jump from a permanent role to a contract? has anyone done it and it worked out well / not so well? your stories would be welcome.
The way i look at it is that in most permanent jobs you are on a six month probation so in essence you are on a six month fixed term contract until they sign that off and most people don't seem to see that as a risk.

Obviously a lot depends on your financial/family position as to whether you leave an established job for pastures new. Not sure if it differs for fixed short term contracts but for a new permie job the boss can simply say 'sorry, it is not working out' and give you notice within the first TWO years, regardless of a documented probation period.
