The (il)logic of job hunting

I am currently in the process of job hunting. Although the company decision which caused this was slightly surprising, we've been through the whole consultation process already and my last day was today (although technically, I'm employed until the end of Sunday).
I've had a few interviews, and was told by telephone earlier this week that I will be made an offer. We didn't entirely agree on the salary (I expect my salary to be reduced from what it was, but the initial offer was at the very bottom of what I will take) - so I should get a call on Monday where the number is confirmed. This is from a company that's very local (less than 10 miles from where I live, and only about 2 miles from where I have been working), and in the same industry that I have worked in for the last 16 years.
Today, I had an interview at a small company (100 employees) in a completely different industry. It is further away - although should still be less than an hour each way even in rush hour. We didn't talk salary - although the agency says that from past experience, they know what they will offer - which is again less than I have been on, but probably similar to the offer I expect on Monday, maybe even slightly higher. But, it will obviously cost me to travel to work and back, the benefits are pretty poor (very low % company pension, no medical etc.) so overall I would be quite a lot worse off.
But the funny thing is - I want the second job. I got a really good vibe from the company and the idea of a total change is very appealing. They know I have an offer pending, so should let the agency know at the start of next week. I hope it's a positive outcome - if it is, I think that's the job I'm likely to take. Might need to buy a diesel car though!

I tend to work on the principle that your gut will tell you if you are making the right decision...sometimes the obvious choice isn't the right one. Sometimes circumstances dictate the role but I am currently doing a 40 minute each way commute on the motorway (in a 3.2 V6 - check out *my* petrol bill 
) but it's the job I want so I will get up earlier in the morning and make the effort. The journey isn't actually as bad as I expected.
