Checking on the status of a job application..again

Morning,

At the end of august i applied for a job i really wanted, i didn't hear anything back so presumed i had been unsuccessful but decided to email the employer to check anyway. I was told that they were still interested but i would have to bare with them as their work load had increased significantly.

This was six weeks ago, do you think it would be a big no no to email the hiring manager enquiring again and re-iterating my interest in the position?

I don't want to be seen as hassling but at the same time, if the position had been filled i would like to know to stop me wondering!

Six weeks ago, yes it is fine to follow up again. Usually if I close a role and I have applications we never got to for any reason, I let everyone who ever applied know that it is over. Just as a courtesy.

Sometimes roles get opened, managers change their minds, or internal candidates are considered, but then it takes ages for agreement. all kinds of reasons.

The worst they can do is turn you down...

I interviewed for a job a couple of years ago (I'm a contractor and change jobs every 18months or so) and heard nothing back other than a vague interest from the agent, took another offer and was contacted 8 weeks later to say they'd like to see me in person. Some managers/HR dept are pretty busy/tardy - it'll do no harm if you really want the job to chase it down.

I am in the same position. Applied for the job in June and interviewed in July. I was told that they only had 2 candidates for the position and they did not like the other one so it was almost certainly mine. However, they needed to interview further people to confirm. At the end of October they had a re-org and the hierarchy changed. I checked with HR and the position is still open. I asked the hiring manager what the status was and he said he would get back to me. I am still waiting. I wish they would just say it's done rather than drag it out for so long but I can not get an answer

The hiring manager sent me a Facebook friend request! Still no update on the job though.

How weird to send you a friend request, you could maybe understand linkedin but facebook!....odd!

Well I emailed the hiring manager and got no response, so just going to presume its a no and if i hear anything else back then that is a bonus.

It is a little complex. The hiring manager used to report to my wife before she moved to another company. The open head count is to fill my wife's void (snigger) but they decided to make it more junior. I'm at a much more senior level currently but looking to start a new career in a new industry. So, I may be rejected for having too much and too little experience. I just wished they would make a decision.

Maybe they want to check you're fairly normal, have some hobbies and will fit in?

I'm trying to change industry and it's proving impossible. This is my only real chance of making it happen.

I'm literally in the same boat as you h0b0! Changing industries too, this role is perfect, i need to get it!

I have just sent another email to HR asking for an update so clicking refresh on my inbox as we speak. I have been trying to switch industry for 5 years (not full time but the odd application) but it is proving impossible to get an "in". It gets even more ridiculous because the hiring manager wants to move over to my wife's new company and she holds the keys to that door! Part of my plan was to take his job when he jumps ship because I would be by far the most experienced at management in the group.

For those wondering why everyone wants to jump out and I want in to this particular position. Not only is it about moving industry for me it is about money for them. With out giving too much info away the group was traditionally under paid by a considerable amount. They are now paying decent money to new hires but have not adjusted the existing employees. This means that the new hires can be on as much as 50% more than the people they report to!.

At this point I wish they would just say "fk off" so that I can move on! On a side note, the HR person is the only person in HR I have ever dealt with that responds to emails quickly. I include my current HR that I use as a manager to deal with employee issues.

Oh dear thats a bit complex, is the position at your wife's company not of any interest to you? Hopefully your wife's company makes a decision quickly regarding him! I suppose theres nothing more you can do now, the hiring manager knows your still interested! I fully sympathise how annoying it is waiting, least your a step ahead of me and have had an interview!

Being a woman and biologically programmed to read into absolutely everything, the fact that they added you on Facebook (although i still find that so odd!) I would interpret as a good sign!

I've worked for this company for just under 4 years, left because there were no entry level roles so left to try and secure a job in IT in the hopes of one day going back to this company, found one, handed in my notice and an entry level position opened at my old place of work! The jobs perfect, exactly what i want! Luckily they only advertised it internally, if they had advertised externally it would have attracted thousands due to what the company does! Apparently the position has been pushed back to next year now, i hope i get an interview at least!!!
