Beards at work.

I have always had a beard ever since I could grow one. Just a simple beard probably a couple of weeks growth kept neatly trimmed. Never had an issue getting a job. Recently every job I have got to interview they have always said I need to be clean shaven. Was just wondering as to what peoples experience have been with beards in the work place. Cant see the issue with having a little facial fuzz but seems to be such a huge deal for many employers.
Don't thinks that's allowed is it? Discrimination?
Only exception would be if you job needed it for specific reasons. My Dad work in an oil refinery and could be called upon to wear breathing apparatus if needed. No beards were a requirement here as the equipment wouldn't seal properly to your face if you had one.

From working in sales, it was always strongly advised to be clean shaven from most people. There still a lot of people who don't trust people with beards for whatever reason.
Obviously there could never dismiss you because of it, but can be frowned upon.
IMO, if it is kept clean and tidy, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I knew about the breathing apparatus thing as have many friends in the navy. Thats how i see it if its tidy its fine. I know that they cant get rid of me because of it directly but if they want rid they will find a way. Thought it was a good time to ask as its movember and all should imagine there are a few people having issues
Interview today is dealer logistics at an Audi dealership but been applying to all sorts really not really found what I want to concentrate on just applying for things i think ill enjoy, employed at the moment so not a huge issue if i dont get it. I am very fortunate not to have been unemployed at any stage in my life.

Once upon a time you could tell exactly who the paedophiles in your area were as they were too busy acquiring child porn to shave and you could educate your children as to who to avoid, and you knew who to throw stones and dogs

And then all the lefties started coming out in sympathy and growing beards to help disguise the real paedophiles so people stopped knowing who to avoid and commit vigilante justice on.
And now, because of this, employers seem to be expected to risk employing paedos because they can no longer tell either.
Its a perfectly valid policy as far as I am concerned.

Having a beard is perfectly acceptable in the Navy. You have to ask for permission to grow one and then have 3 weeks to grow an acceptable beard, otherwise you're CO will instruct you to shave it off!

Yes majority of jobs i have applied for have been customer facing. The one that was most adamant that I was clean shaven was one in which I spent all day in my own little workshop fixing ATMS all day. Walk in in the morning sign in about 9 go to workshop walk out in the afternoon sign out about 6 wouldn't see anyone all day. Was an awesome job didn't stay there to long as refusal to shave meant that despite the fact that I couldn't be fired for the beard every little thing got picked up on out of spite so moved on as it was not worth the hassle

3 weeks, bloody hell, I can get decent one in a week.I have a beard, I haven't always had one however I hate shaving and never shaved when I was off work so after my holidays I always had one and then I'd shave it off when I went back.
I decided to stick with it in 2011 but as I didn't have a trimmer it got a bit scraggy quickly and attempting to trim the beard with a pair of scissors and a comb didn't really work so I got rid.
This summer whilst away I didn't shave and decided to roll with it again, I bought a trimmer and I still have the beard, the wife likes it and as far as I'm concerned, it is staying, I do keep it short and neat.
I'm in sales and deal with members of the public on a face to face basis, the beard doesn't seem to have affected my ability a sales person.
