Automotive Engineering placement

Hi everyone. I am a newly joined member in Pistonheads and this is the first time I am writing even though I am regular follower of the pistonheads forums and news. I am seeking help from all you knowledgeable people in the automotive field about automotive engineering placement that I am trying to get. The situation is as follows.
I am an Automotive Engineering BEng stage 2 student in Coventry University, UK. I am willing to take a year out of university to gain real working knowledge by taking placement in any automotive related company. I have already applied to many companies such as JLR, Mercedes AMG, BMW Group, Brose, AP Racing and many more. However, to be honest, for not having any hands on experience for long time in automotive sector I have already been rejected by many employers. Also due to not having 'brilliant' result which I confess. But as a crazy automotive enthusiast, I am willing to do anything in a automotive engineering field to gain experience. I believe that I do not acquire very good hands on experience due to coming from a country where there are no such opportunities, but I am strongly willing to learn and develop the little experience that I have. Moreover, in university I have learned using CAE software for instance CATIA, MATLAB, ADAMS. I was wondering if any of you have any ideas that will be useful for me. I am also interested in getting work experience from any auto garage around west midlands. Please share any ideas that you have, I will greatly appreciate any help. Thank a lot.

I work for an engine test place in MK and every year we take on 2 students on a 1 year placement. I think we will be starting interviews soon for a start in August time.I am an Automotive Engineering BEng stage 2 student in Coventry University, UK. I doubt that there will be much design work but you will get to play around with engines in test beds for serious OEM's.

Does your university have a placement unit with contacts?
Are you willing to move away from the Midlands?
In addition to the obvious ones with UK engineering centres and factories, there are loads of companies that are suppliers to or working with car companies:

Millbrook
Penso
To name a few.
Although I don't know how competitive it is these days. If you're losing out on the initial CV sifts due to grades you might need to look at smaller Motorsport/go kart/conversion companies.

Although I don't know how competitive it is these days. If you're losing out on the initial CV sifts due to grades you might need to look at smaller Motorsport/go kart/conversion companies.
Look for the most relevant part time / holiday jobs you can find, look for the most value in terms of experience rather than remuneration - perhaps at the expense of a silly commute for the pay on offer, or working odd shift hours etc.
I did a 6 week stint on a production line making sub assemblies for the Mini - whilst this was worthwhile and certainly better than a normal student job, the actual engineering insight was less than I'd hoped.
I therefore started to think about jobs I might be able to get that were perhaps less immediately relevant in terms of subject matter, i.e. outside the automotive industry, but much more relevant in terms of the duties performed. This led to me doing a stint in a medical lab. performing all sorts of mechanical tests (destructive tensile testing, dosage accuracy, high speed video analysis etc) on prototype medical devices and reporting my results.
Finally, think about your own car and what you could do to improve your basic mechanical skills, if you have somewhere to work on it. I started off doing my own routine servicing, ended up doing a scrap yard engine upgrade - mainly because I wanted more power, but it was nice to be able to justify the 'extra curricular' mess I was making in my parents garage
The above helped me get my first choice industrial placement and grad. job - but I'd have been prepared to do a 'solid' industrial placement at a less exciting / non automotive company, before re-targeting the more interesting places for a grad. job later if I needed to.
