Seriously though - to be a mechanic the obvious thing would be to have some relevant qualifications and experience or perhaps an apprenticeship at a recognised motor engineers or similar.

Maybe look to a local college for a course in car mechanics etc

I studied mech eng at uni but had a career change in early 30's - best thing I ever did.

Being a pretty handy 30yr home mechanic would be a good start.

Presume you are handy with spanners rather than thinking of starting from scratch?

Like with a lot of changes, I think you'll have to start on the ground and prove yourself from there.

I wouldn't bother TBH, even in dealerships the money is crap and the work isn't much fun after a while

Yes I do have quite a bit of diy knowledge so that's always a good start.

Had looked at college but would need to quit job as most of them are full time courses, ideally would like an evening course to start.

I wouldn't really want to be in a mechanics garage for too long, ideally would like to open my own or go where the money is tuning and upgrading cars etc, more fun there I think.
