Skills vs Money
Discussion
I am hoping to get a job offer this week but i am not sure if this is a right role for me. Company is offering very decent package, it would be 30% pay raise for me plus extra benefits.
If I look at pay then it looks very promising but on the other hand I think I won’t be utilizing my all skills in this role. Company doesn’t have any in house development skills and they are looking for someone to come on board and start working on projects from day one.
I will be spending 40mins extra on daily commute.
Currently i am working as a Senior Developer and happy with my job. I joined this company over 18 months ago, people i deal with are nice apart from open office noisy work environment. There is a enough work here to keep me busy plus i am in control of the whole application and also mentoring junior developers. So all in all I am fully utilizing my skills here. Pay is at market level but there isn’t any pay raise system here.
I don’t know if I should accept the new offer. A lot going on in my mind, difficult to make a decision. It seems like money vs skills.

Reading between the lines it sounds like this new company are paying over the odds.
Companies rarely pay more than they need. I'd be asking myself why.
It is an interesting question about paying too much for a role. They may have identified skills that the OP has, which will compliment/ be used at a later date to expand the business.Companies rarely pay more than they need. I'd be asking myself why.
I have recently moved companies and the pay is above and beyond what the role normally would demand. However, I believe my extended skill set enabled me to negotiate a wage 25% above the advertised rate. (I did take a cut from my previous role though....
). I think they have eyes on increasing my responsibility over time (GM is looking to retire in a couple of years, which was mentioned at the interview stage, plus there was a greater interest in my 'other' skills rather than the skills for the advertised role)Only been in the role for four weeks - so a little uncertain on the 'real' impact yet. I may be left to hang out to dry?

Depends on what skills you will be using and where you see your career going.
I moved from a lead developer role in an agency to a standard developer role in another for more cash and less stress. If I want to earn big bucks I can always go contracting or get back on the management path.

Unlikely, unfortunately. Edited by sdyson31 on Wednesday 18th March 11:12

Regardless of the pay rise, I think the fact that you would be moving from a role where you had a hand in managing people to a role where you didn't is a backwards step.

You have said enough! I left a job I really loved with a decent career path in a great company years ago for circa 20% more money. I lasted 9 months before walking out - hated every minute of working there, they paid slightly above the market rate because they believed they owned you from 07:00 Monday morning to 21:00 Friday night! They were also the sort of company that 'worked hard, played hard' - which actually meant kicked the shi7 out of you in the working hours and didn't give a flying feck what you did outside of work!
If you are happy in your current role and are not hard up for cash my advice would be to stick with it, the world is full of well paid people who hate every minute of their working day!!!

My current role is 90% hands one and 10% mentoring juniors. There is not much pressure in this role as i work on in house project (or may be i feel no pressure because i am well settle here).

I am thinking about arranging another meeting with the new line manager to discuss more on projects, i want to make sure they have enough work to keep me busy. I don't want to repeat the same mistake i did couple of yrs. ago (When i relocated from Yorkshire to south with 35% pay raise , it was also a career progression for me but after 12 months company changed their priorities and i had to leave this job because my career was moving into boring 1st line support than pure development. Don't mind third line support but 1st line..no way. I did learn about other technologies mainly Sharepoint on my own and managed their all sites single handedly.
This new role is more to do with requirement gathering and system analysis and then integration work with third party software.
