CMI Management Courses

Hi,

Hoping somebody can offer a bit of advice please?

Ive been an Operations Manager at a college for the past 4 years, having studied an engineering degree, got some experience and then got into teaching. I love the Operations work as it gives a great variety between finance, health and safety, resource management, funding/targets, KPI's, project management and pretty much anything else I'm asked to do.

In my appraisal this year my boss suggested I do a management qual, as all the qual's I have are engineering based so would strengthen my application when the next senior management job comes up.

So the question is, does anyone recognise the Level 7 CMI strategic management courses? I'll get a good deal on one as we run them at my college, but I don't want to end up with a qual that nobody has ever heard of in case I decide to leave the college and try to get an Operations Manager job in an engineering company.

If you are an Operations Manager in an Engineering company or work in one and could offer some advice as to a qual which you would be looking for then that would be really helpful.

It's of course not just the title of the training course that counts, it's also a clear demonstration that you have gone out of your way to gain further knowledge and that with that new found knowledge you can add value.

I would suggest in this case that this a respected course. You may also be interested in the CMI/IET et al tie up for the Chartered Manager award. This has been set up for just the reasons you are looking at, new angles to either improve or verify the leading people and managing change skills of Engineers as they move in to more senior leadership roles. I wasn't aware of the IET link so that may well come in handy.

As you say getting some training as well as the experience I'm gaining can only strengthen an application.
