can i hand in my notice with a longer notice period than req

So i ran out of room in the subject.
Question is

My required notice period is 4 weeks. Could i hand in my notice now but say on the resignation letter 8 weeks ? As I am going to leave and currently don't have a job to go to but will find one in the 8 weeks without any trouble.

Alternatively can my employer sack me if I inform them I am looking for anther job ?

Why not get another job, then hand your notice in?

The question is - why would you want to?

Just wait for weeks and hand it in then. What's to be gained from giving them double the notice that they require?
