Hi all,
The vast knowledge of PH always comes in useful and I'm hoping I can tap into that with this thread. I'm a graduate from Newcastle University with a degree in Politics and since leaving Uni in 2013 have spent 2 winters living and working in France for a ski rental company, last winter I was promoted to assistant manager and this winter coming up I will be managing the company and a team of around 10 people, quite exciting and hopefully good experience for the future.
I spent last summer doing a mundane office job for the NHS, and this summer travelling around France and doing occasional driving work for mountain bike companies (doing transfers, and driving them around the alps) - I have also recently started to help a friend with his website doing some SEO work. This is where the work experience comes in.
I want to eventually either settle in France full time, or have some experience so I can start a new career in England. The winter job can continue forever, however, finding good well paid work in the inter seasons and summer is difficult. My aim is to gain experience in an area so I can either set up my own business in France or work in the UK.
There are 2 areas I am looking at gaining experience.
SEO/Digital Marketing - I have fallen into this by accident when a friend was discussing that his website didn't appear on Google, and many SEO companies he had contacted hadn't impressed him. After speaking to a friend who worked in this area, he suggested I have a go myself and see how it goes. I have now managed to get my friends website onto google and it is slowly climbing the rankings. Using basic SEO guides online etc. I've found the whole process enjoyable and feel it suits my skill set well. I can also see how this is a good line of work to be involved in.
The second area is a bit different, Brewing. I am a big fan of real ale/craft beer and am looking into the prospect of opening a brewery in France. I have zero brewing experience, but the idea of starting my own business and creating a product is quite appealing.
I'm in the UK for 5 weeks and am hoping to find work experience or internships in these areas. My question is what is the best way to go about this, just email lots of companies with my CV and a cover letter and hope for responses? Or is there a website (not that I have managed to find) that lists these sorts of positions? Are companies particularly open to giving out essentially free training to someone who will then leave and work for himself/someone else?
Or if anyone in PH works within these sectors and has any contacts, that would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
