Are they asking you for suitable ID? If so, then what is the problem? They are quite possibly simply checking to ensure you are a UK citizen thus have a right to work in the UK.

Unfortunately not - you need to have the right to work to obtain an NI number, but the logic does not reciprocate.

OP - it's just an ID check / confirmation that you're a UK citizen. Nothing more scary than that

The Border Agency requires your employer to make a copy, sign and date the relevant documents to verify that they have satisfied the necessary checks to confirm your right to work.

They also have your address, DOB, NI number and bank details. Either HR is planning identity theft on a massive scale, or they're planning on paying you. It's a risk we all have to take..

If you are worried about this then do some reading on RTI. Every single month your employer or their payroll agent is transmitting your personal data over and over again to HMRC.

You're not being paranoid, just sensible and careful. How do you know how well the HR dept observe data protection? If it's anything like I've experienced in the past, all your personal details will be shoved in a filling cabinet somewhere for anyone to take a look at. I don't trust anyone, full stop!

The question just asked for a positive or negative answer, it did not ask for reasons why. There are certain occupations where a lot of personal,information has to be handed over in order to be employed. If you are amazed that some of us hand over our passports to our employers so easily, your mind will explode if you knew the totality of what some employers require.
It has little to do with the right to work in many cases.

If you are worried about them taking a copy of your passport, never try to get higher level security clearance.

Employers face something like a £30k fine for employing someone who does not have the right to work in this country.
