References on request

I've seen CVs with names and addresses of referees on and ones that just say 'References available upon request'; both are unnecessary. The main reason is that references will only usually be asked for after one has been successful at interview, not prior.
And that's why I raised the question. Some time ago a potential employer contacted my existing employer for a reference before I had accepted their offer.
