This is a stupid question I know. If someone says that a job has a 40 hour working week, would that mean 8 hours a day total, so 9:00AM to 5:00PM? With an hour for lunch?

If I currently worked 9 - 5:30 that would be 42.5 hour working week?

Getting confused about whether it includes lunch break or not.

Depends on the job, surely? If you're not hourly paid, it's a moot point anyway. I've no idea what my contract actually says in terms of working hours, as I just do what I have to do to hit my targets. Sometimes that means working stupid hours in a week, and others it means taking a long lunch and leaving early is absolutely fine. smile

I'm paid a salary. The working hours are flexible.

Just couldn't work out if the total time I needed to be in the office is 40 hours excluding lunch, or 45 including lunch.

I never take a lunch break anyway.

40 hours is 8 hours of work a day. Not including lunch.

My contract is 37.5 hours, which is generally 9-5 with 30 mins lunch.

If you're in some sort of timed environment, ie clocking in or using flexi-time, then many place deduct time for lunch as it's illegal not to be given a break.
