After a bit of advice really... I've been working as an agricultural trader (grains/oilseeds) for a physical commodity company for just over 2 years. We were bought out 12 months ago and while the new company is a massive step up in terms of the size of company, size of contracts, size of book etc, Ive struggled to find my place a bit.
Probably looking for a move of industry, rather than just move of company - ideally down to the City or close to London, but my experience isnt in the FX or money market. At 27 with a couple years of trading experience, and basic working understanding of futures/options as well as understanding how to manage a book I should be employable somewhere.
What sort of options are open to me? Could do broking, although Im more of a technical trader, rather than a salesman. Ideally would like something energy related - oil/gas or power? Anyone here got experience they can help with?

Moving industry will be tough at the moment as some of the banks have been closing down commods desks and competition will be high. Rather than crude products perhaps you could target companies with bioethanol/biodiesel exposures so there is some linkage with the Vegoils/Grains experience you have?
Regarding brokerage i'd tend to steer clear as this is also feels in decline with more business going through the screen (and i'm guessing you don't have a transferable client list at the moment). That said, I think the cash market still probably has more legs although I think that operates more out of Rotterdam/Malaysia.
Depending on your circumstances maybe consider Switzerland rather than London. Plenty of roles in Geneva in the trade that could offer scope to move into other commodities. Perhaps look at getting onto a deals desk/execution or alternatively a hedging/strategy role at a large multinational (e.g. Nestle, Unilever etc) - in uncertain times its a nice safe(r) place to be !
I've traded Energy, Softs and Metals so its not impossible to change markets - you just need to keep plugging away and hopefully something will come up. If you want any more info feel free to drop me a PM

Hi Matt,
Thats really helpful, thanks. I was thinking earlier that an international move would be good, either over to Aussie doing grains, or as you say to Geneva to do something different. Think will spend some time having a look at some opportunities.
