Pitching yourself at interview - thoughts and experiences?

It's going to be difficult to second guess these particular hirers and your experience will be unique based upon their ideas of how to hire; there is no industry standard that all hiring managers comply with (sadly!).
Therefore a couple of maxims may apply: you should only apply for the role if you think you can do it; you need to convince them you can do it via evidence of your previous impact and experience; learn as much about the hiring managers and their most recent hires as you can in order to gain some insight that might help; ideally find out if their 'style' is to hire skills or attitude first (the best would hire attitude as skills can be developed more quickly and successfully than attitude).

firstly thanks for the response, rog. i think even in such short response you hit the nub of the thing.
i have deleted my OP as i would like to remain as far as anonymous as can be.
in short: great opportunity and i hit a lot of the right boxes and had some great feedback. unfortunately for me my spanish language skills are ultra terrible which, given the geographic scope of the role, was deemed to be insufficient for progression to the next stage.
i do take what you said on board though, so thanks for that.
