Where do you advertise to find a trainee/junior?

We are looking to bring in a junior CAD tech in our office and can't figure out where would be best to advertise.

There used to be Connexions who had funding to help get kids into apprentice positions but that seems to have disappeared or dispersed into a number of clunky websites that I'm not sure about.

Has anyone got any ideas where would be best to start? We are in Suffolk where there is reasonably high unemployment so there must be somewhere to find the right person.

Apprenticeships are alive and well.

You could also strike up a relationship with your local higher education establishment and advertise there for those about to finish their (relevant) training.

I took an apprenticeship straight from school which I found on the government apprenticeships site.

I got taken on as a trainee mechanical design engineer and I've been here 5 years now. A few of the places I interviewed at said they'd had 20+ applications each, and this is in the West Mids where there's a fair amount of industry.

I'd say to try there as your first port of call.

Good stuff, the secretary was looking at advertising on CV library and total jobs so as the youngest (30) here they came to me for inspiration.

I've looked up the local government apprenticeship thing and it looks like a good way to go.

What level do you class as junior?

Have you considered contacting your local college? I know the college I attend advertises jobs on a board (old school style on the wall) within the Engineering department corridors and classrooms so lots of people would see it.

There will possibly be ONC/HNC/HND level engineering students studying CAD potentially looking for work.

You may have to check that they use similar software to what you are using or one where skills could transfer, but certainly thought it was worth suggesting!

We used Indeed to find out last two trainee Cad Techs. Funnily enough they are both from Suffolk.

Previously I have got in touch with whoever is running the local City & Guilds cad courses and got them to ask their best students if they would be interested. This works as it was how I got into the industry I'm in.

See if you can get a final year student to work a placement over the Spring holiday - then, if they are any good, offer them a job starting Summer after their exams?
