I have no experience in this whatsoever so I'm hoping the wise owls of PH can assist.

I have been tasked by the MD to investigate some courses on people management. The guy in question is late twenties, very personable and a very good salesman, continually hitting targets and gets on very well with everyone in the office, keen to help out and support the rest of the sales team, even though not strictly his remit, we let him run with it as it does help. Keen to offer him some 'career progression', potential Sales Director role etc but want him to have some training.

So... where do you start? Google 'people management courses' and there's plenty of them. Is CIM accreditation beneficial? Can you do sales biased people management courses?

Any help or guidance appreciated.

Short story, I assessed the need and requirement for supervisory/management training, with a mixture of current managers and hi-pos. I then worked with a training provider to tailor a course to suit our requirements. It was pitched at ILM Level 4 grade. This was for a UK site of a large engineering/manufacturing organisation. Happy to pass on my contact if it helps.

Thanks.

Was that on-site courses? This is for one person, assume off-site somewhere in a mixed group. If your contact can help me out on that then I'd welcome a PM from you.

It needs to be something worthwhile, good for the CV and genuinely helpful.

This was on site and tailored to fit our schedule but you will find similar courses classroom based.
Whether a course is worthwhile and helpful really depends on your objectives, your learning and competency gaps/requirements. The learner needs to be aligned as to what these are. If they go in with one agenda and you design wth a different one then you will only get poor feedback and learning. First decide what you need.

Best practice is to define the development need before deciding what to enrol upon. Where are his competencies and understanding of management theory deficient? Once that's identified, it will be easier to source appropriate development courses. His current level of education may also shape your approach; he may for example be more suited to a formal academic post grad course or a bite size module if he's lacking something specific. Time spent understanding what you both want from development will not be time wasted. Sending someone on an inappropriate course is both a waste of resources but can also be demoralising; and I see this happen too often I'm afraid.

Ken Blanchard Situational Leadership II.
Plenty of online reading before you take the plunge.
The full course is a couple of days. But... the key points and principles can be learned in a few hours.

Plenty of Universities run a one week High Performance Leadership type programme.
eg Ashridge etc

Food for thought, thanks guys.

A bit more discussion needed by the sound of it, perhaps I need the course too.

I have also done the ILM Course for line management, and found it very beneifcial.

The company I used was http://www.trainingbydesignltd.com/ a North West based company, and two very personable trainers.
