Chem Eng degree student summer work advice.

I'm aware that many of you good people work in the oil, gas, petroleum and chemical industries, I'm looking for a bit of inspiration for son number two, age 20. He's just finishing his 3rd year of Chem Eng at Newcastle and is going on to his Masters next year, he's potentially the top of the pile among the current third year students and group leader in the team work.
He's looking for a summer work placement that is relevant to his degree, something to fill June through to early September. Location isn't an issue, any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated, unfortunately as a family we have no contacts or connections in the relative industry. Thanks in advance.

He's very late in starting to look for something.
I got a placement in 2014 at JLR and applied for a lot more but applications open around September, closing between December and March so he'll be lucky to find many of the schemes still open.
A placement can either give you a great idea as to what you want to do, as well as strengthening his CV when applying for graduate jobs. Also a lot of the bigger companies will offer you a job at the end of a placement.
Oil & gas is in the toilet just now though, all my friends who have been to Shell, BP, Total, Technip etc have had their offers rescinded so offshore isn't really possible. He could look at the onshore petrochemical plants though.
Tell him to check out Gradcracker and Targetjobs though, they usually list everything that's still available.

What has he already done in terms of looking for a placement?
Does he know what industry he would like to get into?
In what areas of Chemical Engineeering is he looking for experience? e.g. Design, Operations, R&D etc etc.
