Biting the Bullet
Discussion
Looking for a bit of advice. Work in IT Application Support at a relatively senior level, been here for 8 years and over the last 6 months a lot of changes have happened that has got me considering my position. In short I have decided to leave. I would love to go into contracting and have applied for many many positions and although agents have been very positive I am continually hitting a wall regarding my notice period of 1 month, with many contracts requiring immediate availability.
It's looking more and more likely that if I wish to pursue contracting I will have to jump from my current role to be considered for a future role. Financially I am relatively well off (money in the bank and mortgage paid off), just apprehensive to be leaving without having a position lined up.
Has anyone else been in a similar position ? How did it work out ? I have seen some permanent position I could go for if things fall flat.

Yes I was in similar position a few years back
I really wanted to get into contracting, I would have been starting towards bottom, but saw some contracts that would really suit my skills (I know what Im good at and what Im not)
But at the time my one month notice got in the way, got offered stuff, but it was "start next week: that's it"
Part of me wished I just walked out on the then current job, selfish and unprofessional but it would have got me into contracting
Another part wished I quit the perm job with nothing lined up , already to start a contract and risked it. Worst comes to worst I could have done temp work at a lower rate
If you have the mortgage paid off its a bloody no brainer. But have a brutal look at your cv and experience and be sure the notice period is not the only reason you aren't getting contracts

A public sector contract is likely to have a longer "faff" period before you actually get to start work, so that is one option.
The other is to wait until you have enough holiday stored up to cover your notice period - subject to your employer letting you out (but if you pre-book it and time your resignation right ...)
