Hi,

Let's say I work for a company and I'm still in my probation period. If I book any time off, I don't get paid for it, so I lose both a day's pay and my holiday allowance is deducted.

Is that normal? It's never been like that anywhere else I've worked.

Thanks.

Not having holiday I can sort of understand, to avoid people joining, taking a fortnight, and leaving after two months.

But it should be either unpaid or out of holidays, not both.

That's what I thought, but I don't know anything about this sort of thing. I would expect to start accruing leave from day one, probation or not, but if I book a day off I don't expect to lose both leave and pay.

Anywhere I have worked, if you have pre booked holidays they have taken it from holiday entitlement in advance and allowed me to accrue it in arrears on the understanding that if leaving before then it would be deducted from final salary payment (although I have never left in such a short timescale anywhere)

I suppose it depends on the company/industry

You accrue holiday pay from the moment you start, so depending on how much time off and how many weeks/months you've worked you may not have "earned" enough to be paid for it.

As has been said it definitely shouldn't be on an unpaid but losing holiday days basis, one or the other.

Ok thanks all. I do have leave remaining although it could be the case I haven't accrued that yet, however I think in order for that to be the case they'd have to be counting booked but not taken holiday as already taken. I would also expect any shortcoming either way to be balanced at the time of leaving, rather than on a pro-rata basis.
