Background:

I work an 8 hour day (8:30 - 17:00) with a half hour break for lunch.

When I take an afternoon off I work until 13:00, so 4 and a half hours, but only get paid for 7 and a half.

My logic says that I should work until 12:45 and get paid for 8 hours as per a normal day. Am I right? As it stands I feel like I am losing an hours pay based on the way my work have worked it out. Oddly the first half hour of day is classed as non optional over time (Ie you cannot forgo it and turn up at 9:00), which doesnt get paid to you if you take a full day off.

So am I missing out on pay or am I simply Lookong for something that isn't there?

In terms of what's fair, I'd agree with you.

In terms of the law, however, you're only entitled to a break if you're working for more than 6 hours, so when you're on a half day, there is no such entitlement.

The only thing that would change this is if you're being paid minimum wage. If you are, then by making you work the extra 15 minutes, if it's unpaid, they're going to be paying you below minimum wage, albeit by a tiny amount.
