Sales work all the hours under the sun, and seemingly now with the internet, they work when they are not at work too. Just bought a BMW from a dealer and the guy was in touch late evenings, days off, you name it. I used to work for VW and the Audi main dealers, and that was before the internet really kicked off, and we did enough hours then (10+ years ago).

Service don't do as anti-social shifts as sales, but are always flat out busy, with little time to breathe.

Personally, seeking to those that are still in the trade, I would never get back into main dealers unless I really had to.

Thinks like mystery shoppers, customer satisfaction results affecting bonuses, and the long, long hours, not for me.

Unsure what the Genius role is, but if it's a specialist with product knowledge of a certain genre within the brand, then that would be my choice, as you may not get caught up in a lot of the other stuff sales guys do.

Good luck either way, and sorry for the glass half empty post, but its a reality.

If you don't believe me, spend 5 minutes on Car Sales Meme's on FB.

Genius
Never met one of them during times I've been in BMW dealerships. Most of the staff are pretty much the opposite of this biggrin

Isn't the genius role focused on the halo products - e.g. the i8?

I think it was a genius that took me out in an i8 - they were clear that they were not trying to sell to me, they weren't on commission and were there to explain a complex new product. So no questions about finance, trade in, PCP, etc, a genuinely interesting chat about the i8.

So a soft sell rather than a hard sell.

Sales, obviously. If you want a career you might ax well go for the one that pays.

I imagined the genius role to be like the one in the apple stores - so trying to explain to 65 year olds how I drive works. I'd rather stick pins in my shins!

I seem to remember that the Genius roles don't pay very well at all. Sales can do and service can, it's all down to meeting targets and bonuses etc. but for earning potential it would be sales for me if I HAD to pick one.

FWIW one of my kids went on assessment day at Porsche for a internship (sandwich year at Uni). She got down to the final five for one vacancy. Although very well prpeared and excellent on her feet she felt she lost out on product knowledge. The other four candidates, all male, were Porsche geeks and knew everything about current and past models etc.
