Labouring PT alongside 9-5?

Hello everyone,
Long time lurker first time poster,
Becoming increasingly frustrated and outright bored with my current job (engineer, very niche market) I have been looking at my options for the future.
Not in the position financially to just up and leave (new house, mortgage and young family) I'm exploring possibilities of learning and earning at the same time.
My first love has always been property and the long term plan is to move into property development (funds dependant.) Until I get to that point I have thought about the possibility of getting my CSCS labourer card (seems cheap and easy to get) and get on site. However, not in position to quit my current job I will only be able to work weekends and possibly Friday nights on indoor job sites.
Does this seem realistic to those in the trade?
My thinking was I can earn a bit of money, learn new skills along the way (previous experience in painting and decorating only) and make trade contacts for when going it alone or switching jobs to a construction trade which suits me best.
Not afraid of hard work or getting dirty, in fact after switching to a desk based role, the thought of getting out of the office is quite welcome.

My father in law is a contracts manager for a construction company. Generally many sites do not open at weekends, if they do it's normally Saturday morning only. Of course there are a few that do open all weekend but you may have trouble finding one, and basically labouring is set at or around minimum wage nowadays.
