I do a bit of weekend work for an activity company.

It has always been fixed rate, however it is out of different locations and can take varying times, typically 5-7 hours. (not a controlled time).

Pay has been a fixed rate, and hasn't increased for many years. When goes above about 6 hours, it is below minimum wage, and also doesn't include any holiday pay allowance. Pay is paye (no tax allowance as that is on the real job...), so certainly not self employed. If it is cancelled on site, pay is about £3/ hour... It is enjoyable, but it is hard work and reasonably skilled for a none professional role. It can be cancelled a few hours beforehand.

Am I being a grump, or should I be expecting a bit more..?

If its a regular job, then no matter what they can't pay you below the NMW....

If the employer will not accept its NMW responsibilities, you can make a complaint online to the NMW enforcement team at HMRC.

Paying below the NMW is the end of the discussion, to be honest. Everyone, everyone, is worth at least the NMW...atleast.

Don't let them get away with it.
