Career change - Car salesman

Hey PH's,

I am itching for a complete career change and I keep looking at car salesman jobs.

I just wanted to know if there was anyone on here who did not have any sales experince but a passion for cars and made this career work?

Also is now a good time to get into this industry with brexit happening?

I went into it with just experience of selling mobile phones and a passion for cars.

I enjoy it and make a good living doing so.

There's no right or wrong time to get into it, my advice would be to go with a volume manufacturer and preferably with a smaller family run company rather than a place liken arnold Clarke or similar as the way you get treated and paid are starkly different.

You wont earn as much as you think you will.

You will have commission based around targets, customer feedback and a hell of a lot of FCA paperwork to fill in. Selling the car is the easy bit, completing all the paperwork etc is a nightmare and getting worse year on year.

I reckon we spent more time doing paperwork than actually looking at/test driving the last few cars we've bought.

Thanks for the advice I was looking at the Germans first but still to look at others. Does a volume manufacturer get the nod over the second hand car sites?

There will be stiff competition for the German marques, some people see it as a sign you're doing well when in reality you could earn the same (or more) selling more mainstream brands.

Also you get less, um, PH'ers in mainstream brands. Nobody thinking the deserve special treatment or to be worshipped like a god when they're spending £80k on a 3 series or whatever.

When you're selling them you'll get paid the same for an M3 or a 114i or whatever, I'll stick to selling Dacia Sanderos ta

Do what's right for you. You may think that you'll enjoy selling a certain brand more, which may or may not be true. For me it's about the selling, the people and the buzz.

I can also find something I like in any car which makes selling anything easy, even stuff that most people don't like I can find a positive and run with.

Good luck if you do decide to do it. The hardest bit is going in every day cracking on, selling, handing over, selling, handing over. It never stops and if you want to do well you can't ever let it get on top of you.
