I've had 3 employers in the last 16 years, but they've all included consultancy work with repeat placements on customer sites, including 4 or 5 placements with one customer over all 3 employers.

I'm looking at applying for a new job (with one of the customers I've done contract work for) and having just updated my CV have split the employment section in to two. The first section for permanent jobs, where I list the 3 employers, internal roles, and mention which organisations I've done contract work for. I then have a separate section for contract roles listing the 4 main contract cutomers and the tasks undertaken within them.

Is that a sensible way to do it and not too likely to look confusing? I think if I try and list everything chronologically it will just look a mess.

The job application is then online with the option to add a CV, so I was planning on doing that in 3 blocks by employer and hope I can squeeze everything in. If the view the employer gets is anything the review page on the website trying to put in too many entries will just end up with pages of unformatted text that they'll never read anyway.

Only advice I can offer is:

- keep it simple
- less is more
- worry more about demonstrating your impact than accounting for every second of employment and where you were

Hope that helps

Don't worry about size of CV.

As long as what you put in is truthful and you aren't padding unnecessarily, the content and layout is by far the most important aspect. Make it clear and easy to extract information from. If it's well laid out - recruiters can easily skip the parts they aren't interested in.

Some websites recommend a 1 or 2 page CV - yet my wife's run's to 8 pages and virtually every job she applies for, she get's interviewed for (and in most cases offered). They always rave about her CV.

My career hasn't been nearly as diverse as my wife's - yet i'm struggling to keep my CV to 5 pages.

Thanks. Advice from a an expert as part of a redundancy package years ago was to have a long one that use for personal reference and tailor CV's to specific jobs, so I have a 5 pager for reference but have it down to 2 pages for this job. Slightly concerned that it focuses more on what I did that what I achieved now though.

Thanks for the feedback Rog. Confirmed one thing I'd thought might be an issue plus a couple of other pointers. More work to be done.
