Can someone please explain what a blockchain is, particularly ethereum.
This isn't an IT question. Someone I know has been interviewing for a position with a startup which is involved in this area. The company website makes no sense to me at all, trying to fathom whether this industry/company has legs enough to lure my friend from something more established. This is for a non tech role so their understanding of it is also limited.
If anyone is aware of this field I would be happy to share company name/website by PM. They seem to be growing at a fair rate but is it genuinely new tech stuff which has legs or the emperors new clothes?
Blockchain is complicated, but so is the internet (very complex) and we never question the underlying technology and all the clever stuff going on in the background.
There are plenty of videos on youtube and articles on the internet. Look for material relating to how you might USE the Blockchain, what benefits and business problems could be solved. There are many novel ideas.
The future of Blockchain is very unpredictable. Bitcoin is a form of currency that lives on a blockchain platform, and is probably the most well-known application of a blockchain. The exchange rate today hit over $5000 which is frankly insane.
Anyway, we're playing around with Blockchain at work. Although the tech originated in 1991, it's at a nascent stage. I don't know which company you're referring to, but there are many bold claims being made about Blockchain, and the hype is inevitably resulting in many people promising great things. It's very uncertain what will emerge. Keep your eyes wide open. Who would've thought the internet would result in the Amazons and Googles of today when it was invented in the 80's?

I can pm you the company name if you like. Seems to have a couple of hundred employees (she was told 350 and they're growing) with international offices. It appears they are geared towards the application of these currency types rather than trading or creating currency.

I hear what you're saying. Seems like most uses currently are in the anonymity and untraceability benefits, plus people hoarding. Ignoring some of the grand claims it does appear that the underlying tech has a lot of potential in this increasingly digital world and for secure transactions between tradition institutions.
