Should I start without being given a contract first?
Discussion
The last 3 months i worked without a contract and was told "it will be with you soon"....as soon as i got it i quit on the spot as they had added some things i did not agree with.
There wont be a next time but if there was i would want to see the contract asap...the guy who took over from me got his contract the day he started and they asked him to sign straight away.

So I start a new IT job on Monday. They said I'd be given a contract by mail which hasn't happened, the agent I've been dealing with is pushing me to start anyway without having read a contract first, should I tell them I want a contract before I start or should I start anyway?
It depends on what assurances you feel that a contract would give you, that you NEED to have, before you start working for them. You already have a contract. The notion that a contract needs a document is a misconception. A few types of contract have to be in writing. Employment contracts are not one of those types.
An employer has to provide an employee with a statement of key terms. This may or may not contain all of the contractual terms.
If after starting you receive a document that contains things not already agreed then either agree them, negotiate them away, or leave.
