Having been stuck in the land of the unemployed for over 3 months and having had mixed success with finding a new job, is it potentially worth having my CV written professionally? I've had success using my current CV in finding work before, however whilst I've had some interviews since I lost my job the ratio of applications to interviews is a little on the terrible side?

Just wondering if these services offer something that's actually worth the investment? I'd rather not be pouring cash down the drain (even if it's not a huge amount) if there's no real benefit.

My background is Transport and Logistics so it's not an IT or Services based industry which a lot of these companies seem to highlight their skill set in.

Appreciate any assistance!

I'd definitely recommend it. I used CVnow.co.uk and they were great.

Helped me secure a promotion to where I work now.

Like any outsourcing activity, depends how much time you have to do it yourself. There is a certain skill involved.

Trade-off is that you should know your CV inside out. If someone else writes it, do you? You should know your career and ambitions, the CV isn't just a document of your past. It's a sales document to present yourself. You know your motivations, can a CV writer do that as well as you? Depends on career type as well.

A good middle ground might be a few example CVs where you can gauge what best practice looks like, then write your own.

I used Rog007 on here. His CV and consultation definitely helped me to get a job and has changed my outlook on selling my skills/abilities.

Whether or not you choose to use a professional CV writer, I do think it is worthwhile to let someone whom you trust have a read of your CV and your covering email. A second pair of eyes is always useful to spot what you haven't.

I've had some input from my father (his background is senior business management, CE positions etc) as well as a couple of his former colleagues so it's already a bit of a hybrid of their opinions and suggestions on the base I started with.

That was something I was concerned about, I think I'd prefer somebody to cast of more expert eye over it and suggest changes rather than rewrite the whole thing to a point I have to spend weeks familiarising myself with it again.

How long is it that you're talking about weeks to familiarise yourself with it? I can imagine a day or two at most - presumably all that another author can do is change the emphasis on how roles and achievements are presented?

On this thread and others, there seems to be high praise for Rog 007. I think I'll be sending him an email as my CV isn't great to put it mildly.

D_T_W, would you object to me emailing you later this evening to pick your brain about a couple of things?
No problem, happy to assist with anything if I can

Bit of a deluge over the last week or so from folk wanting support in one way or another. It’s great to see so many people wanting to get a grip of their careers and taking positive and proactive action to create a competitive advantage in the job marketplace; a number proving it’s never too late!

I hope you’ve all found the feedback and insights helpful and that they have given some impetus to help make the changes you’re after.

Good luck! clapthumbup

You had a flick over mine a couple of years back, I honestly can't remember what the feedback was but I made some changes and landed a new job, so thanks for that hehe

Hi Rog007, would it be possible to use your services also?

My wife is in a bit of a rut with her career. She updated her CV and applied for a couple of roles but is getting disheartened of not landing anything. I've said I would look at her CV and cover letter, but I'm no professional.

I would also like to my career to take a different path, again, would be great to use your services. Could you drop me your details please and hopefully we can have a chat
