Hi Everyone,

I am trying to work out what the salary for a sales director, running a team of 4 sales managers, with a €60m target should be. Deal values range from €250k to €4m.

If you need further info in order to give a ballpark, then let me know.

I didn't pay them anything. I am trying to establish if my wife is being woefully underpaid (I think she is). Sorry, should have said in the beginning.

Nothing, I think. We pay people who would sit under the director far more than that number of 71k.

Experience.

The job you described is pretty standard and sales is strongly subject to regional variation. Best thing to do is find your subordinates base salary, 130% of that should be yours. Expect them to earn as much as you with overtime.

Have a look on indeed!

It sounds more like a sales manager role, running salesmen, than a sales director. Often the latter title is thrown in to attract people who are driven by such things.

Also depends what the sales team are doing, if the customer base comes to you and they are just processing orders, it's remedial. Telesales, slightly less remedial but not exactly skill based. All the way up to international wheeling and dealing of course. Would expect salary to reflect the role, rather than the headline figures of revenue, could be a multimillion pound but tiny margin product for all we know.

If you wife is in sales, and can't sell herself... I would say bottom of the salary range.

Thanks for the help so far.

The role covers:
Switzerland, Austria, Benelux region, UK, Germany, Malta, Russia. Travel is about 35% of the time.

Involves planning, coordinating, and then executing a sales strategy with the team. Combination of relationship management, and cold calling/walk ins from word of mouth.

Sales are started and completed by this team but with the help of a pricing/quotation dept. Once the deal is signed, a little bit of relationship management is needed but mostly it is transferred to a project manager.

Net Margins are about 5%. Company turnover €1bn.

It is more me, than her, who thinks she is underpaid. I run my own business so it's a bit different.

A lot of 'depends on'. Where is the role based, UK or Europe? What industry? What team size? How much new business? In my current industry that could be anything from OTE GBP 110k to 250k+.

How is she paid compared to her reports? Guessing they are paid substantially more?

Which probably goes to suggest that the OP needs to provide more information!

Those salaries are way below what anyone would expect to earn as a seller in the IT sector with those sorts of transaction levels and targets, never mind a director.

There's also no such thing as overtime for B2B IT sellers.

Needless to say, in other industries, that'll be completely different.

Is she “the” sales director (board member) or just a sales director by title?

Which country is your wife based in? Salaries can vary massively country to country.
