Apprenticeships - getting one!

My lad's 18 and studying Electrical Installation at College (Colchester Institute). By all accounts, he's doing very well at it.
Part of the attraction of the course and the college (aside from his interest in the subject) was the stated 'abundance of apprenticeships' that the sector offers and the support offered by the college in getting on one.
Despite no end of applications and interviews, he's yet to land one and getting close to the point where his learning level and age will put him beyond the scope of such roles. He has interviews which he says go very well but hears nothing after - not even a rejection letter with reasoning. The college are next to useless in providing any support.
He's getting a little despondent so I was just wondering if he / we are missing something.
Any pointers gratefully received.....and any Sparkies in mid-Essex in need of an apprentice, do PM me!

There are a load of self help books on the subject of interview technique. Invest £10 in one of these,and do what it says. It's all BS, but you'll be surprised at the results. Prior to reading the book,I was getting 1 in 3 offers v interviews, thereafter, I was always offered.

This was a thought but the one feedback he got was the opposite of this and that he came across very well (he failed as they reduced the intake numbers after the rounds of interviews). Plus he's secured three part time jobs all of which required interviews and had no issues.But I will check this out further.

I knew that college well when I ran my own independent training provider company.They are shyte.
I was meant to be in 'partnership' with them placing young people into decent apprenticeships but hey ho, they failed to deliver one to any of my learners attracted to the college.
The way it works is this; they get funding for running courses that are progression pathways onto apprenticeships. This means they are hardly ever going to hold their hands up and admit they don't have apprenticeships at the end.
You will possibly need to go and hang the college apprenticeship 'support' people out of a window by their ankles and threaten to drop them before they will help you. FE is merely about bums on seats. The whole apprenticeship system is a scam which is really used to lower overall NEET figures by demanding a child is doing something up until at least they are 18 years of age.
The very same college ran a massively expensive project over at Harwich which resulted in nil jobs in the time I observed it.
I am very sorry to sound so cynical but CI are up there with the best mugging caring parents like yourself that will support your child.
One thing I would advise is he/you write to the companies involved in electrical installation on the wind turbine fields. They are desperately sort of sparkies and, even more short going into the future for their c&m.

Not true! i started my apprenticeship at 23.In my class were a pair of NHS apprentices in their 30s.
In the mechanical class were another couple of apprentices a similar age to me.
Dont despair yet, your son is still young.
