Permanent to fixed term contract

Has anyone ever gone from a permanent job to another job that was fixed term? What was your experience like when doing this?

I am currently on a permanent contract, however my current job pays low compared to the national average. I've been on a job hunt of late and have found one that I like the sound of. Thing is it pays slightly more but is further to travel, so after subtracting the extra travel expense I wouldn't be making much more than I am currently on. Its also a fixed contract for 12 months. Job progression looks good, at my current job there is no progression as its a small company. I've already applied for the job. Am I a bit mad for attempting to make this change? Of course there is a big chance I wont get the job anyway but its worth a try.
