Leaving zero hours job

Looking for some quick advice if anyone can help?

I started a new job on the 28th of last month on a zero hour contract. Payday at this company is the 5th of each month where your paid for the previous months hours.

For various reasons I don't like new job and want to leave.

My questions are:

1) Can you just quit a zero hours contract without notice (if not how do you go about it)

2) How likely is it that they will pay me for the hours i've worked this month? Can they just not pay me and if they do how would i pursue it? They owe me about 60 hours pay if it matters

They have to pay you for hours worked. Never quit until you have another job lined up but you can quit anytime really when you first start.

I realise they are supposed to pay me, just didn’t know if it was common for employers to try not to and if I’d have to pursue it somehow.

I’ve been self employed most of my life so will go back to that once I’ve left this job.

Generally the notice period is based on how often you are paid so if it's monthly pay then it's generally a month's notice that you'll need to give. Make sure you have some sort of proof of how many hours you are owed in case they don't pay you but they certainly should pay what's owed.

Your contract should confirm what the notice period is.

If I do have to give a months notice can I just refuse the hours until the notice is over? They can’t make me work if Im contracted to zero hours can they ?

Any ideas on how I can prove my hours.
I have an app on my phone that I clock in on but it doesn’t show me how many hours I’ve done.

Given all your questions I presume you did t get a contract or statement of terms and conditions not got shown a handbook?

Yes you can refuse to work any hours. If you couldn't it wouldn't be a zero hours contract.
Yes you should be paid for the hours you've done.
You should be keeping track of the hours you work, either on your phone or in a diary. Otherwise how else will you know if you've been paid correctly?
