Damn it..I meant soul!!!
When ever I am in a shopping centre I always feel sorry for the people that work on the little stalls that try and flog you expensive Dead Sea salt based cosmetics and stuff like that but then I realised there is worse.
I saw a guy stood at a tiny little desk type thing trying to flog life insurance to passers by.
Anyone that came within 15ft was asked 'got life insurance?' In the days of Internet comparison sites and such, that must be a hell of a way to try and get sales. I was also put off by his companies banner that showed a typical British family, black mum, white dad and mixed raced child of undetermined gender..
I hope he is not paid purely on commission!!

Someone has got to do it I suppose, most people doing that may do for a short term job but I imagine there are those that have done it a long time!My brother is a manager in the NHS, works harder than most I know, cares, takes work home and even personally puts his resources to use in order to better patient care.
He is underpaid, undervalued and massively over pressured.
I'm sure there are worse jobs and he is by no means on the bread line but it must be sole destroying being criticised for doing something you actually really care about!

Conversely, I worked as a theatre porter for the NHS when I was about 19 and its the only job I have ever had where I felt like I had helped people in a meaningful way. Just sharing a joke or reassuring someone who is nervous about going into surgery etc. He is underpaid, undervalued and massively over pressured.

I got paid more than the nurses too..which was a joke.

The one that affected me the most was a young man (just 18) who was an ex bernardos child who through stupidity had ended up locked up over a silly argument with a neighbour.
We stripped the flat of all of his belongings including things like birth certificate,photo,s and sent the lot to landfill.
It felt like he was being punished twice, all of his identity and memories such as they were gone.

Done a few when I was younger ...usually involving production lines in factories where you are little more than a robot in a fixed process. 12 hours shifts, night and day, putting plastic bags in boxes, or making the boxes themselves.
Spend the time day dreaming and wishing your life away....I got out of it after a 4 years stint, but I still see some poor buggers who are in there 30 years later, walking out pale faced and the end of a shift, looking forward to dinner, TV and do it all again the next day.......

It must be pretty bad doing it these days, I did a little (double glazing) back in the 80's and tried to make the most of but it wasn't so awfully scripted back then so you could go off piste a bit more and have a bit of a laugh. I had to feel sorry for the guy who came knocking on the door of my new build in Milton Keynes trying to flog double glazing to new houses that all had two yr old windows. His supervisor must have been desperate in order to try that area!
What you've got to remember is that in sales type roles, whether it's in a shopping centre, on a phone or chapping doors, by and large the companies do it because it works. Which means if you have the right mentality (i.e. be money driven and able to shrug off the 95% rejection) there is big money to be made. In high ticket stuff like windows far more than most of the people 'feeling sorry for you' make. Which is why good sales guys want to be commission only.
If you don't have the right mentality and are just doing it 'for a job' then aye, it'll be soul destroying. The flip side is you won't last long.

We use a guy to unblock fat traps underground every 6 months. He has to climb into the pit, break the rotting crust of food and use a vacuum suction machine to suck out all the food waste and fat that gets trapped in the overflow system. (Outlet from a huge food processing centre)
The stench is literally dreadful and will make you sick.
