BAE - Competency based interview / presentation
Discussion
Having spent 10 years at my current company i started to look for a change and applied for a role at BAE, working in broadly the same area (different product) but at a senior level so i would assume the details are less important in terms of technical knowledge.
Now having only worked for my current company since i was 18 i have never interviewed anywhere else (other than for internal promotions).
I assume a competency based interview will be "retelling" my past experience linked with direct examples and linking this to the expectations of the new job?
This is followed by a case-study and presentation based on said case study.
Does anyone have any good "tips" or resources i can spend some time reading over ... i have hired / interviewed people in the past and i generally go from a perspective of how they would fit into the team, motivation and future capability / development as opposed to direct experience.

Let suppose the competency is project management
Qu. Tell me about a project you had to manage.
My advice would be to use the STAR model to answer
Situation, Task, Action Result
You can google the rest, but essentially
Situation - what was the project, why did it come up, how complex, how important.
Task, What was YOUR role
Action what did you do
Result - what did it achieve for the business.
Simple !

God knows what a competency based interview is but.....
My best interviews came after reading a pair of books not currently available. There were pretty formulaic though, and concerntrated on how to prepare, and how to present yourself in the best light.
Have a look at something like this...
www.amazon.com/Answers-Toughest-Interview-Question...
Most of these books are written by very very experienced and knowledgeable people, who have interviewed hundreds of applicants. Using this will really help you avoid the pitfalls of opening your mouth in the wrong place, or coming out with weak statements. (At least in my opinion). I played ask me interview questions with my family for a week beforehand, and some of the questions were almost taken from the book. Go for it, it's only a few quid and a good investment in your future.
Good luck OP

This is the classic competancy based interview method and will be how the interviewers will record whatever you say.... Depending on what level you're going for when you give the "Situation overview" you may want to include the options you considered.....Qu. Tell me about a project you had to manage.

One other thing they tend to use them from behaviours not necesarily tasks/technical competancies; so more "can you think of a time when you had a difficult customer" and not "how do you manage projects"
Cheers Gents, I will look into the book and construct some good examples with a ‘strategic’ rather than ‘operational’ bias, my biggest gap is that it’d be my first senior managerial role and as such be responsible for other managers, not something I have done before.
Am I best tackling this ‘weakness’ head on and converting it into a strength? No bias, new to the business, fresh outlook, open to new ways of working, etc?

I have worked in Talent Acquisition or Recruitment for 20 years, in Exec Search and for a FTSE 100 Company and now one the worlds biggest FMCG. I have hired people in countries from India to Nigeria, Switzerland to UK and US / Mexico and everywhere in between. My best interviews came after reading a pair of books not currently available. I estimate I have interviewed over 2000 people, but I could be out either way.
Macho interviewing doesn’t work, you want people to relax, be themselves and answer in a fluent way. Competency interviewing does that very naturally, as allows people to talk about experiences they have, rather than what type of animal they’d like to be.
OP be prepared to talk about how you motivate people, how you lead, tour management style - as you go up in level, your knowledge becomes less important but your ability to relate to people and your need for soft skills increase.
Good luck, they are a very decent firm.

Whilst you may not have man managed people in a formal way... "Can you give me an example where you have had to lead a group in an activity?" (That's the sort of question you may be asked Am I best tackling this ‘weakness’ head on and converting it into a strength? No bias, new to the business, fresh outlook, open to new ways of working, etc?
