So I have a job interview tomorrow. Preparation tips?

I've been preparing for a few days. The job is for a large data centre, and it's a m+e surveying role. It's a 2nd interview, the first was based a bit on m+e knowledge, and my aspirations etc. Tomorrow's interview will probably be more of the same, but one of the company directors will be sitting in for it.

So, what can I expect from this? I've got most bases covered, but sometimes interviewers throw in the odd competency question that I haven't prepared for.

Just remember that it's not always about the answer. They might even throw a curveball question to just see your reaction and how you handle under pressure.

Tbh there isn't much point worrying about it. If you are good enough for the job, you're good enough - just be yourself. Have a last minute read up on likely topics and take a few deep breaths. They are people just like you - remember you are also interviewing them to see if the job is right for you as well. It works both ways.

Firm (but not overly firm) handshake Bone up on the Company. Give them something to remember you by whether it’s picking up something about the chaps picture of his wife and kids or saying you’re entering the bog snorkelling championship this year!

Be prepared for the " what are your best characteristics?" Which is easy to answer. But my favourite which I always ask " And your worst traits?" Which is a lot harder to answer.

I got asked that once....

- Your worst trait?
- Arrogance
- And what do you plan to do about this?
- (smiling) Nothing.

Which raised a smile all round as it was tongue in cheek and I ended up getting the job.

Just be yourself. I'm always impressed by honesty and not being told what the candidate thinks what I want to hear.

Counter to the majority, I honestly didn't prepare at all for either of the 2 interviews I had back in January. I didn't find out a thing about the company like everyone says you should. I went into both interviews completely open and honest about what i could and couldn't do. I was asked what I knew about law firms and answered honestly (nothing - I've never worked for one before, but I have worked in other professional services organisations...).

My thinking was that if they would hire a "false" me that had all the right answers then the relationship could sour when the "real" me started work.

It's obviously worked because I was offered the role and have spent several months now working with a team I really like and "gel" with and for the first time in a long time I genuinely enjoy going to work.

Just a thought.
