Discussion
This happened to me yesterday and simply feels like a kick on the teeth, with little I could do to prevent it.
Started work for a firm in November, fixed term contract. Was told by people that would likely lead to a full time perm situation. That was not the case on asking HR later on.
I work in a section of about 30 guys. three of us were taken on at a similar time on FT contracts. I was given the s
ttest job of the three, nothing I could do to change that, luck of the draw. It is a menial job, but can take some time to complete and the other guys are very busy doing their thing so hard to make time to train on other things. My experience and skills I used to apply with are not being used at all.
Two brand new jobs on another section are advertised as perm roles. Me and one of these 3 FTC guys apply, are interviewed. but the other guy does not apply, shows no interest, nor do a lot of perms internally as the boss is a complete arse. So I am concerned as there seem to be few people applying, I later learn only 3 do for 4 positions.
I am then interviewed again for my own role, feels like I am being asked to apply for my own job. This happens with the other guy I applied for the other section role with. And seems a formality. This is because they realise they lose 2 people if we both work on this new section.
The jobs are open on the jobs board and the other guy on our section who applied for nothing is interviewed too.
You can see what's coming, they both get jobs offered, I do not, simply because the job I was given to do upon start offers them nothing in the future, that was not my choice, it was what I was given to do. I was give the menial s
t job as the guy regularly doing it was off sick, and it basically stuck when he came back as his injury prevented him from doing it.
I was never told this might affect my future potential, was never guided in any way, have had no real contact with my manager since being there. Just a round peg in a hole doing his job, no sick, no holiday, no moaning.
Oh, and the jobs on the other section have now been filled and other people have since been taken non on my section perm.
Obviously this means I will be leaving as soon as I can, but is there a case for poor treatment. I simply feel utterly useless, unimportant, through no fault other than I was given a job to do when i started and have done it, and now been told that isn't enough to consider taking me on.
It was a 2 from 3 deal and I was the loser. I guess someone has to be. But why is it always me!

tbh OP, I can understand your frustration - seen it done to others. Companies use fixed term contracts to basically just have a bum on a seat, maybe you get some experience from it and that's all. They don't care one bit about you, your career, what you can offer - they've just paid for you to do that s
ty job.
I would be taking my services elsewhere pronto if I were you. Turn up on time, leave bang on time as per contract. You do that job as requested - that's all though because that is all they are paying you for.
I've seen so many people get suckered into thinking companies actually care about them. They don't. If they are not showing any personal understanding on their side, why should you be a loyal employee. To them you are just a headcount doing a job. You are not Joe Bloggs from team A that is really good at X,Y,Z and has lots of potential and we'd like to see more of what he is about.
Go find an employer who values you as a person and can offer something better.
