I would like to hear of the experiences of anybody who has done a bit of this before.

I am between jobs and the intention is to a) give something back for a month or two and b) have something worthy to put on my CV for the "gap" period as the job hunting is now running into its 6 month.

Apart from things I need to look out for pitfalls etc (this is just a van drivers assistant shifting furniture from the shop to peoples homes) will I be able to obtain a proper written reference that I can present to potential employers when I eventually get a salaried job again?

Would charities usually cover volunteers' parking charges and a reasonable sum for petrol to get to the shop and home again or bus fare? The advert says reasonable expenses so I am just wondering what people who have done this before got. I have emailed the shop to ask about this but so far no reply.
.
Will the JobCentre need to know about me doing this voluntary work or are there complications? I am claiming JSA.
