Agencies Good and Bad
Discussion
Whats your experiences.
Here is an absolute classic. When I knew we were going to be made redundant earlier this year I was straight onto the agencies (4 big names to begin with that specialised).
After a great experience with personal service from one agency consultant back in 2014 I thought it would be worth approaching them again but they had moved to another agency so I tracked her down and registered with them although she would not be looking after me as she was in a different dept now.
So after the initial "honeymoon" period where they like the grab the CV off you I would say over the last 9 months I have had probably 3 conversations with them. I have emailed a number in the team that cover different areas to be met with no replies......utterly useless.
3 months ago I had a chat with one of the consultants about a "possible role with XYZ company".......heard naff all after that.
last week off my own bat I was able to find out who the new head honcho was at XYZ company to contact him via linkedin and he agreed to meet me for a chat next week.
conveniently or coincidentally the agency contacted me yesterday twice (private number) then a voicemail then an email saying that XYZ company now want to meet me. what after 3 months ? its like they can now smell the fees and are like a dog with a bone.
I feel like pulling my details from them and saying I dont need their services any more because up until now its been well below expectation and rather dilatory. If was to get this job I feel they dont really deserve the huge fee they would receive when for the best part of a year I have been unemployed and theyve done very little to show willing for me......I dare say in 3 or 6 months time I will see a post on linkedin from this agency in big bright colours asking people to join them in congratulating this "consultant" due to their promotion to director or some such position for all their hard work. Passing a CV to a company is hardly rocket science (recruiters here dont take offence as I am sure there are bad eggs in every industry).

It seems everything I look at is through Agencies.
I've been in the same job for nearly 10 years, so it's a long time since I've been job hunting. I have started now to look into somewhere with the possibility of some better career progression.
I'm a Chartered Accountant. Agencies seem to have the market sewn up.
The jobs I've applied for all just go to an agency. A lot of the time it doesn't even listed the company you're applying for. Just says XYZ is a 'large production company in the Midlands' etc.
I didn't approach any agencies, but a number of them now have my details just through job applications. I do get contacted quite regularly with job opportunities, but I've heard back nothing from maybe 20 or so applications.

Start reading a pile of CVs.......
This person seems worthy of interest........
Lots of good experience.........
Wow, s/he would give me a run for my money......
As I got to page 2, the penny dropped.
Just had to ring the recruiter and express an interest in the hitherto anonymised candidate. The pregnant pause when he realised the candidates name on his database versus who I was....................priceless.

9 months now. not for the want of trying all the usual and the less usual avenues. such a depresser..
once I get back into a job I have a plan. a totally different outlook to where I work and for how long.

What do you do and why do you think you’ve not secured your next role? If you don’t mind me asking.
