So about 3 months ago I was made redundant from my Developer job. I have been doing a C&G Electrical course of an evening and finished that in November. After I was made redundant I decided that I would focus on becoming an Electrician. I find it more interesting than sitting in a chair all day being a code monkey.

I have been working with some a family member on some Industrial jobs as a Mate to gain some experience, I have applied for the job, Emailed over 200 companies and handed my CV out in Wholesalers, signed up to Agencies. But so far, nothing has come of it. I know the time of year is not the best but has anyone who is currently working or has worked as an Electrician got any advice for me? As I feel a bit lost as to what I am doing wrong.

I’d imagine most solo sparks and gas/plumbers that require a mate would go down the apprentice route as can pay them way less and it’s part funded by government. They can also mould them to how they want them. Not sure how you can get a foot in the door tbh just keep plugging on until you fully qualified.

Electric works ,well try Ukpn website, careers and job vacancies they was looking for mates ,obviously this is more external national grid but if you are smart and climb the ladder so to speak, it’s very well paid and the benefits are helpful .

As you've identified its not the best time of year, many sparks are flat out before Christmas as its always a deadline people want stuff completed in time for. So maybe attack with renewed vigour in new year, or maybe some of the seeds you've sown will germinate.

I dunno about finding work, I occasionally look at job sites to amuse/torture myself, the industry seems at its heathiest in years last time I looked so unless its all fantasy I can't see why you'd have problems, unless your CV is showing too little practical experience? Might have to wing it slightly if so.

Most of the companies I have spoken to said the same thing, but they all did say they will let me know in the New Year. I have 3 months experience working in the Commercial/Industrial sector. We had a large job of replacing the lighting in a warehouse for LED lights. Also upgraded the Fire Alarm System. I will keep applying for the jobs, and trying companies. I am not going to give up. As finding a job is hard work.

Happy to look over your CV in the meantime if that would be of value.
