Self assesment fine questions
Discussion
Last year my OH's trading partner and friend became seriously ill so they ceased trading. My OH went online and unregistered as being self employed.
Yesterday she received a letter saying as she hadn't sent in her tax return she was now liable for a £100 fine. The fine is payable within 30 days of the date of the letter which was the 25th of March (not sure how it managed to take ten days in the post). Today she sent them a letter telling them about her she unregistered.
My question now is what should we do regarding the fine? Will the 30 days to pay be extended whilst they are looking into this, or should we just pay it now and then try and claim it back? Obviously with my OH no longer running her business money is quite tight.

My initial recommendation would be to call them. The queue to get through can be a pain, but they have always been very good at explaining the options, and making sure that what is discussed is recorded.
I'd second this. I had the same issue as OP and after one call it was sorted.Gassing Station | Jobs & Employment Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
