Not having been in the situation of job hunting for a long time, what is a reasonable timeframe to accept/decline a job offer?

A week feels about right.

In that I’d be wondering why you hadn’t replied at that point.

Accept..pretty much immediately. Decline, in as short a time as to be reasonable to the firm making the offer.

When I got made redundant I applied for several jobs more I think out of being worried by not having a job, etc. I've had a few interviews but one offered me the position before I left the interview.

I can do the job with no concerns, money is manageable but down a lot on previous job and the job is commutable, by offering the job so quickly the other options which are more interesting/potentially more money haven't come to conclusion.

I am uncertain as I don't want to take the offered job and withdraw a few weeks later if a more interesting position is offered but also don't want to risk not having a job either (the job offered wouldn't be my first choice).

I know it sounds like trying to have my cake and eat it but the early job offer is causing a little difficulty.

You are trying to have your cake and eat it! You guess you need to make a decision and crack on.

Was the job an absolute panic move, in that you don’t really want it?

In that case, thank them and decline.

If it’s a job you could do, but a step down, is there any chance in speaking to them and asking if there’s a possibility of a more senior role?

It sounds like you have a number of options, so personally, I’d wait it out.

You could just be a mercenary about it, and accept anyway while waiting for other offers.

Companies get that all of the time, and would be mildly irked, but would care less than you’d imagine.

After all, you have no real loyalty to them, and if your interviewers could get higher paying jobs which they’d enjoy more, they’d take them too...

I would say a couple of days. Any more than that and they will think that you are trying to play them off against either your current Employer or others. That’s not illegal but it risks souring the relationship.

Whilst its not an ideal scenario, this happens a lot, I wouldn't let it overly worry you
